The five members of Mill Valley's Library Board of Trustees are appointed by the City Council. Trustees are appointed for a three-year term and may serve no more than two consecutive terms. Terms are staggered to minimize the impact of turnover. One trustee may reside outside the city limits but within the boundaries of the Mill Valley Elementary School District. The board's officers include a Chair and Vice-chair who are elected annually.
Overview
The Library Board of Trustees is responsible for overseeing the long-range planning for the Library. Trustees approve policy, advocate for the Library, and in general, undertake those projects and programs that promote the welfare of the Library in the community. The Library Board is considered an advisory board because it does not have responsibility for appointing the City Librarian or submitting the Library's budget to the City. Trustees serve as a liaison between the Library and the City Council, as well as the general public. In recent years, the Library Board has served a very important role in aligning the efforts of the Library's support organizations (the Friends of the Library, the Library Foundation, and to a lesser extent the Mill Valley Historical Society) with the goals of the Library as directed in the Library's strategic plan.
If you're interested in serving on the Library Board, please contact the City Clerk or check the Board, Commission, and Committee vacancy page.
